2010 Community Involvement Report
Focused on the community At Lockheed Martin, we never forget who we're working for, and each year our employees come together to make a difference in the communities in which we work and live. In 2009, Lockheed Martin and its employees logged more than 226,103 volunteer hours. As a company, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is focused on educating our youth, improving our communities and serving our customers. And, with nearly 28,000 energized and passionate employees, we are able to collaborate with many community organizations each year, including:
Forty Lockheed Martin employees and their families volunteered at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge as a part of the annual Make a Difference Day activities. Volunteers removed sumac from the prairie, cut mesquite and dug up Arundo grass that was displacing native vegetation. For the past two years, the habitat restoration activities at the nature preserve and refuge have been a part of Lockheed Martin's environmental stewardship initiative. The removal of invasive species will help bring the nature preserve back to its natural state. The enthusiasm of our employees for helping foster a stronger community provides the momentum behind our civic outreach activities. During National Volunteer Week, we recognize employees volunteering 250 hours or more in a calendar year to outside organizations on their own time. In 2009, 386 employees were recognized, each receiving $250 to go toward the nonprofit organizations receiving their volunteer time. Donations totaled $96,500. Employees volunteering 100 hours or more received the President’s Volunteer Service Award issued by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. In 2009, 325 additional employees were honored with this award. As an engineering-oriented company, we are reaching out to K–12 students to show them how they can effectively prepare for and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). During 2009, Aeronautics employees reached out to more than 37,000 students through the Lockheed Martin Engineers in the Classroom program. The Engineers in the Classroom program takes engineers out of their offices and into the classrooms to talk about STEM and conduct hands-on, curriculum-based activities with the students.
